About ENLIGHTEN project

A New Standard for Electric Mobility

ENLIGHTEN is a European research project focused on developing and testing a new 1200V electric powertrain for battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The main goal is to evaluate whether increasing the system voltage above today’s 800V standard can improve efficiency, reduce energy losses, shorten charging times, and lower overall system costs.

Spark Change

What ENLIGHTEN Delivers

Electric Drive
Developing a next-generation 1200V powertrain for improved efficiency and performance.
EfficientPower
Advanced motor and inverter design for smoother, quieter and more efficient driving.
Lower Emissions
Contributing to the shift from combustion engines to cleaner electric mobility.
Longer Range
Reducing energy losses to extend vehicle range — especially in real driving conditions.

For a Cleaner, and Brighter Future

ENLIGHTEN supports the EU Green Deal and Fit-for-55 targets by developing a 1200V electric powertrain that lowers energy losses, reduces material usage, and shortens charging time.
By improving EV efficiency and performance, the project contributes to the goal of climate neutrality by 2050 and a 55% reduction in COâ‚‚ emissions by 2030.

Core Value

Powered by Tomorrow

To test the ENLIGHTEN powertrain, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N has been selected as the demonstration vehicle.

This C-segment electric car provides the ideal platform to validate the new 1200V drivetrain in real-world conditions, including efficiency, charging performance and system integration.
All key components developed in the project will be installed and tested both on test benches and on the road.

Any questions?

What is the goal of the ENLIGHTEN project?
ENLIGHTEN aims to develop and demonstrate a next-generation 1200V electric powertrain that improves charging speed, energy efficiency, and compatibility with today’s EV infrastructure.
Why is 1200V important for electric vehicles?
A higher voltage allows for lower current during operation, which means reduced energy losses, smaller components, and faster charging, especially useful for long-distance and high-power applications.
Will the new powertrain work with existing charging stations?
Yes. The ENLIGHTEN system is designed to be backward compatible with existing 1000V and 500V charging infrastructure, making it easier to integrate into today’s market.
What makes ENLIGHTEN different from other EV research projects?
It combines advanced components — like GaN-based inverters, dual-voltage batteries, and dynamic switching, into a fully integrated system that will be tested in a real vehicle (Hyundai IONIQ 5 N).
How fast will the ENLIGHTEN vehicle be able to charge?
The system aims to achieve a 20% to 80% charge in just 10 minutes at 350 kW fast-charging stations, thanks to improved cooling and power management.
When will the technology be ready for the market?
ENLIGHTEN targets TRL 5 by the end of 2028. The technologies developed are expected to reach the market within 2 to 4 years after the project concludes.
