ENLIGHTEN-BOARD

Who We Are

What is ENLIGHTEN?

ENLIGHTEN is a European research project that aims to develop and test a next-generation 1200V electric powertrain for battery electric vehicles. By increasing the voltage beyond today’s 800V standard, the project seeks to reduce energy losses, improve charging speed, lower costs, and optimize material use.

The project will design a complete high-voltage drivetrain, including a dual-voltage battery, GaN-based inverter and motor, AC/DC combo-charger, and smart control systems, all integrated and tested in a demonstration vehicle. Through a combination of virtual simulation and real-world testing, ENLIGHTEN will define the optimal voltage level for future electric vehicles and deliver key technologies ready for industrial adoption.

Vision & Mission

Key Technologies

Our Vision

ENLIGHTEN focuses on three core technological areas to build a next-generation 1200V electric powertrain that improves efficiency, charging speed, and system integration.

– AREA I –

Power Electronics & E-Drive

Development of an integrated E-drive combining a multi-level GaN-based inverter and electric motor.
Key benefits include:

  • Up to 30% loss reduction at partial load
  • 99% peak efficiency
  • AI-driven predictive control for enhanced reliability
  • 20% cost reduction through compact, efficient design

– AREA II –

Battery Technology

Design of a dual-voltage battery system (1200V / <1000V) for efficient driving and fast charging.
Highlights:

  • 10-minute ultra-fast charging (20–80% SOC)
  • Advanced cooling with phase-change materials
  • Backwards compatibility with 1000V infrastructure

– AREA III –

System Integration & Architecture

Ensures seamless interaction across all components (battery, charger, E-drive).
Key developments:

  • Smart power distribution unit (PDU)
  • Intermediate DC/DC converter
  • Dynamic voltage switching for optimal performance in real time

Vision & Mission

For a Cleaner, and Brighter Future

Our Vision

To support Europe’s transition toward zero-emission mobility by developing smarter, faster, and more efficient electric powertrain technologies.
Aligned with the European Green Deal and the Fit-for-55 targets, ENLIGHTEN contributes to the decarbonisation of road transport, a sector responsible for nearly a quarter of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions, by enabling cleaner, more accessible electric vehicles for all.

Our Mission
1
Innovation: To design and demonstrate a next-generation 1200V electric powertrain that reduces energy losses, shortens charging time, and lowers system costs. Through advanced power electronics, AI-driven control, and dual-voltage battery systems, we aim to set new performance benchmarks in e-mobility.
2
Sustainability: To contribute to the European Green Deal and Fit-for-55 objectives by improving powertrain efficiency, supporting circular design principles, and enabling more resource-efficient vehicles with lower environmental impact throughout their lifecycle.
3
Quality & Safety: To ensure the reliability and robustness of the powertrain, ENLIGHTEN integrates predictive control models and dynamic voltage switching. These systems improve fault detection, support fail-operational modes, and contribute to safe operation at higher voltages. All components are tested under realistic conditions to validate their performance and long-term stability.
Core Value

An experienced European consortium

ENLIGHTEN brings together 11 partners from 8 countries, combining leading expertise from industry, research, and academia. The consortium includes technology providers, automotive innovators, and research institutions working together to develop and validate a new high-voltage electric powertrain.
This multidisciplinary team ensures that all aspects of the system, from design and simulation to integration and testing, are approached with both scientific rigour and real-world applicability.

Project Inception
On February 5th and 6th, 2025, project partners gathered in Vienna for the kick-off meeting hosted by AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. This marked the official launch of a four-year collaboration to develop and demonstrate a next-generation 1200V electric powertrain for electric vehicles — a step forward toward more efficient, faster-charging, and sustainable mobility in Europe.
